Back at the end of January last year I set some reading goals for 2022 – in this post I want to share how I did in relation to them, and also share my goals for 2023.
My 2022 reading goals were:
- Read 200 books.
- At least 15% by non-white authors.
- At least 25% by female authors.
- Write and publish, on blog or elsewhere, 50 reviews, of which at least 15 should be of books not written by white men like me.
- Read more than 60,000 pages.
But how did I do?
- Read 200 books. Yes, a total of 203 in Goodreads. I think this was doable because I aimed for it, but I’ve reflected in detail on it in another blog post.
- At least 15% by non-white authors. 22/203 were by non-white authors. So just over 10%. I missed my goal here – possibly not if I was easier going regarding edited collections, etc, but it’s something to work on in 2023.
- At least 25% by female authors. 47/203 were by women. So just under, at 23.15%. Again, something to work on in 2023, and perhaps be more intentional about.
- Write and publish, on blog or elsewhere, 50 reviews, of which at least 15 should be of books not written by white men like me. 25 reviews. Not even close. However, of those 25, 17 were of books by people not like me, so that’s good.
- Read more than 60,000 pages. According to Goodreads, I read 60,701 pages in 2022. So a safe margin!
So, goals for 2023?
This year, I’m hoping to do the following in relation to reading:
- Read 150 books. A smaller goal, in order to facilitate reading some longer stuff, as well as writing more reviews!
- At least 20% by non-white authors. I’m going to attempt this again.
- At least 30% by female authors. I’m determined to meet this target, one way or another.
- Write and publish, on blog or elsewhere, 50 reviews, of which at least 25 should be of books not written by white men like me.
- Read more than 50,000 pages.
If you are a reading planner, I’d love to hear about your goals in the comments!
